Mats Bäcker
Born in the small town of Hagfors in the western part of Sweden 1958.
In the late 70 ies and 80 ies Mats Bäcker began his career as a photographer of rock music's unruly backstage environments. Here he met both the new stars of rock music and the occasional superstar.
One of his first famous photos was of Iggy Pop in Copenhagen 1977. He was only 19 years back then.
In 1981 he moved to Stockholm to work for a rock magazine. It was a magazine that in many ways changed the way of portraying rock music.
He was also the photo editor and the Scandinavian agent for his colleagues Anton Corbien and Pennie Smith.
In 1984 he was fed up with the music industry and started to study at The University Collage of arts and craft in Stockholm.
Since then he has worked for a great many Opera houses, dance companies and theatres around Scandinavia.
During all this time Bäcker has exhibited around the world, at such different places as Paris, Madrid, Los Angeles, Riga and Beirut apart from Sweden. He has also made several books and short films etc.
Apart from working with photos of performing arts, he has been doing his own projects and experiments. In the last decade there has been a growing interest of his early works from the rock scene. Resulting in a touring exhibition and a book “Raw Power”.
